SS 200 series is mainly composed of chromium, nickel, manganese and nitrogen, and some models also contain copper and molybdenum. This stainless steel is a variety developed by the United States to replace 300 series stainless steel, especially in the period of tight nickel resources or high nickel prices. The characteristic of 200 series stainless steel is that manganese and nitrogen partially replace nickel, thereby reducing costs.
Specific to the chemical composition, the typical grades in the stainless steel 200 series, such as 201 and 202, have the following main components:
SS201 stainless steel (UNS S20100): manganese (Mn) 5.5-7.5%, nickel (Ni) 3.5-5.5%, chromium (Cr) 16-18%, nitrogen (N) ≤0.25%
202 stainless steel (UNS S20200): manganese (Mn) 5.5-10%, nickel (Ni) 3.5-5.5%, chromium (Cr) 16-19%, nitrogen (N) ≤0.25%
Austenitic stainless steel (18-8 stainless steel) has better corrosion resistance than other stainless steels; its strength is low, but its plasticity and toughness are excellent; its welding performance is good, and it is mainly used as chemical containers, equipment and parts, etc. It is the most widely used stainless steel in industry.
201 (UNS S20100): A lower-cost alternative to the 304 grade with reduced nickel content and higher manganese content.
202 (UNS S20200): Similar to 201, it offers good corrosion resistance but with slightly lower mechanical properties.
Due to its good corrosion resistance and lower cost, it is used in the production of kitchen utensils, sinks, pots, and pans.
The 200 series stainless steel can be found in automotive trim applications where formability and corrosion resistance are important.
It is also used in the production of decorative pieces, architectural trim, and furniture.
